Cardiff airport hits passenger target

Cardiff airport has passed it's passenger target for 2006, with two million customers passing through the airport during the year. This is an increase of 13% compared to the previous year and makes it one of the UK's fastest-growing airports.

Spokesperson Peter Phillips said:

"We are one of the fastest-growing airports, that we can see figures for, in the country if not Europe.

"There is a growing movement by the Welsh to use local airports rather than travel to London. As that continues we should be on target for 13% growth again this year.

"Welsh passengers now regard Cardiff as a viable option. A few years ago it wasn't. People are more determined to fly from close to home, and we are also seeing growth in the numbers of incoming passengers from overseas."

Government figures predict that by 2030 more than eight million passengers will use the airport. A £7 million enhancement project is currently underway to equip the airport for this increase in numbers.
