I was on a business trip and so needed it to be quick and easy. When I returned to the airport and after remembering what level I had parked the car on, again it was easy once I found my ticket. Terminal Car Park 1 Luton Airport The car park is a short, covered walk from the terminal building and being multi-storey there is no need to defrost the windscreen before driving away on a frosty night. The individual parking bays are reasonably spacious - we will definitely use this car park again. My only minor gripes are that you have to pass through an "unexpected" barrier before reaching the car park barrier itself and the direction signage is not very clear - not helped by the current building works at the airport. Terminal Car Park 1 Luton Airport The convenience and ease of booking and parking in the multistorey makes the airport experience so much less stressful. I can be back in my car and on my way home within minutes of picking up my luggage. My only issue was that with the constant updating of the airport layout and signage, I initially missed the multistorey sign, so had to pay 3pounds to exit and then go straight back in! Terminal Car Park 1 Luton Airport The Bad: 1. Like all UK car parks, the parking bays are too small - this must be addressed. You can barely get your door open once parked. A VW Golf is now 1.8m wide, so with a 2.4m parking space only 60cm is available at each side to open a door, assuming a similar vehicle is parked adjacent. Less if it's a bigger or poorly parked car. Family estates are wider still, and many SUVs are longer than 4.8m - bigger than the space itself - and almost 2.4m wide! You should also recognise that all the driving lanes in the car park are also too narrow, and although multi-storey parking is a good way to save surface space, they must be built big enough for modern (and future) vehicles to manoeuvre around easily as well as park. 2. The exit is poorly signposted. The signs are attached to the concrete cross-members of the roof, which conceal the relatively small signs until you are too close to the sign itself. Suggest paint on the floor or alternative sign positioning. Also, the lighting was broken on half of the 3rd level, so I couldn't see the signs in the dark anyway. 3. The £3 pick-up/drop-off is blocking traffic into the airport. This system is not only a disgusting and embarrassing money-maker, but the infrastructure is also unable to cope with volume and affects access to the all car parks at Luton. I had to queue for 10-15 minutes to get to the (empty) lane that took me to the multi-storey. The Good: 1. The vehicle recognition at entry and exit works well and is convenient. Exiting was easy. 2. We missed the entrance as coaches blocked our view to the car park entrance, so we didn’t see it and ended up in the build up of traffic trying to get out of the airport. There was a lot of confusion and cars were blocking the barriers to get out, probably having missed the entrance, as we had done. Eventually, we managed to get out and go round again and enter without any problems, as the way in was not blocked this time. Terminal Car Park 1 Luton Airport I booked on line. The process was quick and simple. We arrived at the carpark. Our registration was printed on the ticket. We returned from our break and inserted the card into the barrier at the exit to the carpark. We were then informed that we needed to pay £400 to exit. A conversation with the operative eventually cleared things up. We had used a different car to travel to the airport to the one with the registration entered when I booked on line. The stress and confusion lasted perhaps 5 minutes and then we were on our way. Not sure how this could be avaided into the future, but perhaps it needs thinking about. Even though we came very early but was congested and nearly lost the flight. Drop off vehicles were blocking both lanes and therefore we couldn't pass. Once that tackle it deserve 5 star. Entrance to multi-storey car park can be improved by having signs on back sides of the road as I missed the entrance and had to do another loop in traffic. We have golf clubs that are not on wheels and having to carry them from far side of the car park to the terminal building was very annoying.
